Nurturing The Nurturers – Carey Sherman, Ph.D.

Guest: Carey Sherman, Ph.D. Director, of the Remarried Caregiver Study Life Course Development Program Institute for Social Research University of Michigan…Ann Arbor caregiver@umich.edu

Join Teena, a remarried caregiver, and Carey, as they discuss the special problems that may be faced by care givers who are remarried and may not have a lifetime of history together.

Carey explains how most research into care giving is based on families where they suppose no divorce or remarriage. However, Dr. Sherman and her colleagues have found that the issues that may have been stressful when a family went through divorce…may resurface in some form when a parent is disabled and needs care.

Often, remarried caregivers find they do not share the bond they might have thought they had with the loved ones children of family…or maybe they knew the bond was weak and did not know how to fix it.

This study is designed to determine what the most common problems are these remarried care givers face…and then how to develop an intervention program tailored to the remarried care givers needs.

Join Teena and Carey for a fascinating conversation…and some good ideas to help caregivers who are in this situation.

If you would like to connect to Dr. Sherman about participating in this porject.. you can reach her at caregiver@umich.edu
