Nurturing The Nurturers – Guest: Dr. Phyllis Marganoff

Join Teena and Dr. Phyllis Marganoff for a great conversation about building solid relationships. Phyllis holds a Doctorate in Psychology and is a “Certified Gottman Therapist.” Dr. John Gottman was at the University of Washington when he did research on what makes a relationship work. Much of his work has been published in books and one of the most famous of his books is “The Seven Principles of a Successful Marriage.” Phyllis studied with the Gottman Institute and tells us many of the evidence based strategies the research shows makes a more solid relationship. Teena then asks her to stretch a little and take some guesses as to what would help care-partners in their relationships. She asks Phyllis if there are their special things care partners can do to help stay connected during tough times. Dr. Marganoff has many great ideas and helps Teena visualize a house. She says that Gottman’s work shows that a house needs to be built on solid “bricks” of positive emotion and positive communication. The more “bricks” we build, the more solid our foundation for the relationship and the better we can manage conflict in the tough times…without the “roof blowing off!” Join in for laughter and hear Teena share some personal insights…. as she has learned to adjust to a “new normal.” following her husbands cerebral hemorrhage, stroke and spinal cord injury.
