Dr. Mayer interviews Mike, a very intelligent young man from an upper-middle class family of professional parents. Mike’s parents separation and living in disorganization bordering on hoarding sets the stage for a boy to recluse himself from society. In the interview Mike describes his teenage years and takes us on a spellbinding journey of a teenager who is socially isolated and develops anxiety with severe physical manifestations. He is paraded through a host of physicians who can’t come up with an answer for his symptoms. None of these medical doctors mention the possibility of a psychological cause to his physical pain. A college psychologist finally mentions a ‘conversion disorder’ and Mike begins psychotherapy for anxiety. His treatment is successful and he is pursuing a surprising career for someone who suffered from the type of emotional turmoil as he did.
