Part One: Guest Interview
Gloria, founder of The Parent Coaching Institute, talks with PCI Certified Parent Coach® Sheila Wenger about another type of “identity theft” in our digital age— our Parenting Identity™. Sheila, the mother of twins, a boy and girl, currently age 7 and the owner of The Parent Partner is also a Lead Instructor with Parent Coach International.
Guess what universes and cells have in common? The very first thing they do as they emerge is to put a boundary around themselves—this boundary identifies them. In the embryo, for instance, certain cells become brain cells, others nerves, other livers, etc. etc. All the various cells know where they are going because they know who they are.
So if you know who you are as a parent in this digital world, you know where you are going. If you aren’t clear on your Parenting Identity™ it could result in more stress and countless frustrations. Why?
Without the anchor of who we are, we get blown away easily by everything coming at us—we aren’t grounded in what we believe and we are much more likely to “cave in” to nagging kids, peer pressure, and what Gloria refers to as the “industry-generated culture” in her book, Parenting Well in a Media Age.
When we are strong in Our Parenting Identity™ we have clarified our values and what is most meaningful to us and passed that information to our children, directly in clear communication and indirectly through our choices for them.
Parenting in our digital world becomes that much easier when we protect and nurture our Parenting Identity™. Tune in for ways to do just that!
