Melasma is a skin condition which causes patches of pigmentation (dark coloration) on the face in women who tend to tan easily. It is caused by a number of things, particularly hormone changes from pregnancy and taking birth control pills, but also by sunlight. In fact sun damage also causes brown spots to develop as we get older, known as sun spots, liver spots, or senile (age) spots. But what can be done about these skin problems? This week on Inside Cosmetic Surgery Today, your host, Edmonton cosmetic dermatologist Dr Barry Lycka talks once again with fellow dermatologist Dr Gordon Telford from his Victoria, British Columbia practice. The two doctors talk about what causes Melasma and how a specific vitamin skin cream containing Silymarin (from the Milk Thistle plant) has been developed which is showing great results in treating & reversing the effects of it. They also talk about Retinyl Palmitate vitamin skin cream which can not only treat sun damaged skin and the brown spots, but it can also reverse the damage and protect from future damage.
