Trends and Tastes of Spirits with Monique Huston

Discover the tastes of terroir and enjoy a sip of the world with Monique Huston, national director of Winebow Spirits. According to Huston, “People are hip into looking at terroir of spirits and getting a sense of the land.” Just as with wine and food, the soil and weather can influence the taste of spirits. Mezcal in Tulum is one of the hottest trends these days, and Huston even provided a sample of an agave that takes 25 years to produce one bottle. It was so surprising to actually taste the terroir. Globally, most people consume whisky with soda, coconut water or green tea.

 

Here are Monique Huston’s top three tips about spirits:

  1. Before purchasing spirits, read the label. The most important information is the place where it was distilled.
  2. Spirits are distilled and can’t go bad. If the bottles has been opened, it will start to oxidize and reduce in alcohol content. The reason wine goes bad is because of the yeast.
  3. Invest and collect in spirits. According to Huston, the value increases with time. People are making more money off vintage whiskey than watches and gold. There are auctions and trade groups to sell the bottles. One bottle of Macallan Single Mart from the 1920s sold for over $1 million.
