Moms who work outside of the home, or from their home, talk about the challenge of work-life integration all the time. But this is not just an issue for moms. As the economy has changed, more dads are becoming the primary caretakers for their children and more and more families have two working parents. Dads may not talk about this issue as much as moms, but the challenge remains. On this week’s show, I speak with executive coach and the author of Hoof it! 7 Key Lessons on Your Journey of Success, Dr. Richard Norris, about how men can re-define success to put family first and use that priority to guide them as they juggle the competing demands of home-life and work. If you or your spouse faces this struggle (and really, who doesn’t?), you will want to join us for this discussion. You can learn more about Dr. Norris, get his book, and follow his blog, at LeadingMenOnly.com.

What do you think about the concept of work-life balance? Where should dads place their focus? Or do you have an idea for a for a future show topic or guest? I would love to hear from you. Drop me a line at playdateplanet@gmail.com.

As you may know, our schools and workplace cultures are plagued by bullying, negativity bias and low employee engagement. Are all bullies bad people?

Anger is a normal and predictable response to situations over which we have little or no control. As a caregiver, the number of people, situations, and events over which you have little or not control is practically limitless. If you’re a caregiver, the question is not whether you’re going to get angry – because if you are a living, breathing human being, you will lose it.

Knowing that anger is an unavoidable part of the caregiver experience, the real question is, who can you count on to be there to give you a hand and pull you back in from the ledge when you’re ready to jump? This week Elaine shares how technology sent her to the brink, and how the support of a few special people helped her get through an angry, adrenalin-fueled explosion.

We visit with Mauri Malka, Director of Family Services at Jewish Family and Career Services in Louisville, KY. Mauri shares some innovative and exciting programs they have developed to help serve older adults and their families. You can call JFCS at 503-452-6341.

And journalist Jeanine Stice with Nutrition, etc., shares quick tips on how to minimize stress by eating healthy snacks and incorporating mini bursts of exercise into your daily routine.

Caregiver Story time is about a 56th wedding anniversary trip to Mt. Rainier, and how Elaine came to understand that no matter how hard we try to go back, the hands of time are forever and relentlessly moving forward. She tells how she came to understand that regardless of how bleak things appear to be in the future, we can still choose to find joy and pleasure in the present.

We visit with Mauri Malka, Director of Family Services at Jewish Family and Career Services (http://www.jfcslouisville.org/)in Louisville, KY. Mauri shares some innovative and exciting programs they have developed to help serve older adults and their families. You can call JFCS at 503-452-6341.

And journalist Jeanine Stice (http://www.statesmanjournal.com/article/20130611/COLUMN0702/306110078/Salem-woman-s-website-offers-support-caregivers)with Nutrition, etc., shares quick tips on how to minimize stress by eating healthy snacks and incorporating mini bursts of exercise into your daily routine.

If you have a question, comment, or a rant you’d like to share with Elaine, send her an email at Elaine@CaregiverHelp.com (mailto:Elaine@CaregiverHelp.com).</itunes:summary>

Ed Raarup’s book, Fireflies and Shooting Stars “The Tale of Enzo” addresses this subject of being different and having the determination to fit in despite difficult life circumstances. Both in the book and in life, accessible playgrounds for kids become the foundation of uniting a community and providing children with special needs a place to play alongside of their friends and family.

Victoria Mavis and Ed Raarup discuss how this is one of the children books that has adult lessons which can change a community’s attitude toward acceptance, inclusion, and living life fully for people with disabilities. Enzo’s tale to find his light, only to discover things about himself and the world quickly becomes a bridge for children with disabilities and adults to build confidence and coping strategies in light of being bullied or picked on for being different, or having a disability.

Through reading the book Fireflies and Shooting Stars “The Tale of Enzo” or listening to the CDs, listeners will learn the value of friendship, individuality and the important lesson that Enzo teaches: “know just who you are”.

Douglas Gentile is a developmental psychologist, an award-winning research scientist, educator, author, and one of the world’s leading experts on the effects of mass media on children, adolescents, and adults.

Did you know that the first 28 seconds of a 30 second commercial is used to set a very specific mood, to make us feel happy, relaxed, or maybe even jealous of those fabulous looking people we are watching? Advertisers knows how to engage our unconscious minds and our most primal feelings so that we are much more receptive to their messages. We are literally unconsciously driven to want their product from a deep feeling level. Rationality? Logic? Forget them. In fact, often the actual product being sold doesn’t appear until the last 5-10 seconds, as if an after thought.

Check out commercials with your kids sometime. While you watch, count the number of seconds until the product appears and then discuss what mood the images were aiming for. You can make the unconscious ploys more conscious for your kids. If you would like a free copy of Gloria’s 20 page resource guide: 100 Family Media Literacy Activities, just e-mail info@thepci.org with subject line: 100 Activities and you will receive engaging, fun activities like this for talking with kids of all ages about commercials and other content areas such as screen stereotypes and media violence.

In this podcast, Dr. Douglas Gentile discusses a few of the fascinating “psychological tricks” advertisers use, along with ways to arm our kids against their harmful effects. An engaging speaker as well as a respected scientist, Dr. Gentile has spent many years researching this topic. He has a wise and balanced approach to media issues and gives this cogent advice to parents: “Compared to factors such as environment, genetic predisposition and experience, the mass media is the most controllable risk factor when it comes to the formation of children’s negative behaviors and parents have the most power to decide on how best to keep this risk factor in check.” Amen to that!

Part Two: The Parent Coaching Corner™

Gloria continues coaching Geri, a mom of three sons, ages 9, 11, and 13 about use of their digital devices. In this session (the third of 12 coaching sessions) Gloria explores the strengths of Geri’s wonderful boys to put all their many positive qualities “on the table.” And Geri shares the insights she gained from a family camping trip without any electronics! (Listen to the two previous podcasts to catch up with Geri.)

Please Note: You hear a portion of a one hour coaching session. We can’t record the entire session, but we give you the important gist. For more information about PCI Parent Coaching, please contact: info@thepci.org.

You had what you thought was a great sales call. You think you’ve got the deal. But then you never hear back from the customer, or they simply stop returning calls. What went wrong? Join author and serial entrepreneur George Horrigan for the surprisingly simple Solution in Plain Sight to landing the sales you need by really connecting with customers in ways that drive them to take action.

George has personally started and run seven businesses, and his school-of-hard-knocks approach has helped over 1200 business leaders achieve their hopes and dreams for their business over the past 17 years.
During the show, George provides practical tips to how to connect deeply with your customers instead of simply falling back on the features-benefits/needs-wants approach that we’ve all been taught. Now, I thought I had that pretty well figured out after having had a successful sales career in my early days, but I had an AHA! Moment when George pointed out that I hadn’t taken it quite far enough to really trigger action on the customers’ part and gave me two simple tips to move beyond where I was at. If you’re stuck with sales that don’t close, this is probably just the Solution in Plain Sight that you need.

Father Dave has been a spiritual leader for a long time and while he has helped many parishioners through grief, he had never had to face a grief that did not claim lives, but lifestyles, hopes and dreams instead. In her award-winning book, Good Grief: Finding Peace After Pet Loss, she shares touching anecdotes and suggestions to foster healing for those who have lost their “dearest nonhuman friends, their pets.” After undergoing her own “tsumami of loss” of family members, pets and her marriage, she was inspired to write about her grief.

Before discussing pet loss, she shares a touching story that conveys how after our loved ones die, they often seem to send us signs of their continued presence in our lives. This phenomena also often occurs with pets. Many people say grieving pet loss is even harder than losing a human loved one.

Sid discusses what to watch for so you know when it’s time to seek medical attention or euthanize a pet. For example when the pet’s normally playful activities no longer seem so, pay attention to whether your pet might be experiencing pain. After the death of a pet, it’s healing to create some sort of memorial service for it. Both adults and children can create meaningful rituals to honor and thank their pet.
In her role as an animal chaplain, Sid is a grief counselor for the bereaved pet owners, both before and after their animal dies. One of the best ways to help a friend cope with his or her grief is to listen and be proactive in offering assistance during the first few days after their pet died.

Derek and Carolyn focus on garden lilies, explaining the difference between early-flowering Asiatic hybrids, Trumpet lilies and Oriental hybrids, and also crosses between all three. Derek recalls his meeting with the late Jan de Graaff, famous American lily hybridizer and the late Leslie Woodriff who followed him with sensational lily introductions such as Black Beauty and Star Gazer. The expert this session is Kate Sparks, of Lilies & Lavender, a Pennsylvania cut flower farm. Kate explains how she turned her hobby into a profitable business, by selling cut flowers at farmer’s markets and then supplying fresh cut flowers for special events such as weddings. Every Saturday she is a vendor at the Rittenhouse Square farmer’s market in Center City, Philadelphia. Kate also describes some of her favorite flowers for cutting, including rudbeckia, lisianthus, lilies and dahlias. Answering emails, Derek explains how long a repeat-blooming daylily can bloom, and when to divide daylilies as the clumps become crowded. He also describes how to divide perennial Oriental poppies, and recommends a special perennial species known as Papaver bracteatum, from the mountains of Iran. Blood-red in color, with black petal markings, it has poker stiff stems and a flower the size of a steering wheel. The Fells comment on the ability of sunflowers to purify a contaminated soil, Derek explaining that in Russia sunflowers are being used to restore agricultural fields poisoned by radiation from the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident. The Fells remind listeners that email questions can be sent to derekfell@verizon.net and also they are invited to view a sample copy of their award-winning on-line, full-color newsletter, the Avant Gardener.

She has been with the organization since 2010.

On the show, Roxanne explains the thoughtful and intentional way the staff and board determined program outcomes – essentially, what they wanted their clients to have or be able to do by the time they leave the transitional housing and support services of Emma Norton Residence and the permanent housing of Emma’s Place. Using outcomes is fairly new for this agency and so it is a perfect case study for those of you who are starting to devise outcomes for your own programs. The agency has already begun to see extraordinary results.

Also, since Roxanne has more than 20 years experience with nonprofit program management, I asked her what she would do if she were starting a nonprofit like Emma Norton Services today. She asks some really great questions that every leader of a new organization needs to answer to get off on the right foot.

I hope you enjoy the show.

You have tremendous healing abilities inside your body and your brain, and you can heal from and recover from some of the most horrendous injuries and illnesses – including Mild Traumatic Bain Injuries!
.
More people than you might imagine have suffered from MBTIs. You might have suffered an MTBI and you didn’t even know it.

MTBI is usually caused by a fall, an automobile accident; they can occur from a sports related accident or be a blast injury from an explosion. Sometimes people who have suffered an injury that resulted in MTBI may seem just fine on the surface, yet he or she will continue to endure chronic functional problems and not have a clue what in the world is going on. Some people know immediately that something serious has happened.

This episode of Just Between Us is going to focus on ways to support MTBI survivors and explore real tips for healing and lots of suggestions for treatment options.

My guest in this episode is Laura Whittemore, MTBI Survivor and Thriver, and the co-author of Recovering from Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI): A Handbook of Hope for Our Military Warriors and Their Families; and Understanding Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI): An Insightful Guide to Symptoms, Treatments and Redefining Recovery.

Laura has been in the field of psychology, education and been an entrepreneur for more than 30 years. She sustained a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI) in 2001, caused by a horseback riding accident. Fortunately, she was wearing a helmet. Since this life-changing injury, she teamed up with her cognitive therapist, Mary Ann Keatley, PhD to co-author two books to help readers recognize the symptoms and learn about the treatment options. They are also the founders of the Brain Injury Hope Foundation.

This is an inspiring episode that includes lots of solid information from an expert who has been there. Laura’s message is a message of hope. With all the medical advances related to the neuroplascity of the brain new pathways to memory cells can be created, and recovery from MTBI is more possible than ever before. Be sure to listen in to this episode. It is so worth your time!

Why can you drink better wine in Utah than you can at 30,000 feet? Mark gets a consultant’s point of view from Josh Wesson, who has helped choose inflight wine for JetBlue for nearly a decade. A former sommelier and wine retailer, Josh explains the challenges involved in selecting wine to be consumed by passengers in pressurized cabins, and reveals some of the things he looks for in making his decisions. On Bizarre Beverage News, Mark gives the details on Operation Swill, a law enforcement sting recently conducted in New Jersey. Officials raided 29 bars and restaurants for putting cheap booze into high-end bottles, and found one establishment that was actually passing off rubbing alcohol infused with caramel food coloring as single malt Scotch.
