Listen:

The Foster-to-Adopt model of mindful change

Eartha Powell

In this episode, Eartha gently reframes the way many of us are taught to approach healthy change. So often, wellness advice asks us to adopt — to commit, to overhaul, to make a permanent decision today. But for many of us, that pressure leads to grief, sacrifice, or quitting before we even begin.

Drawing on her experience in nursing and as an adoptive parent, Eartha offers a different path: a two-stage model of behavior change.

🌱 Fostering is the first stage — initial awareness that something needs to shift, and a flexible, exploratory season where you get to know a new practice. Mistakes are allowed. Self-critical language is set aside. There is no forever required.

🏡 Adopting is the second stage — when a fostered practice has been lived long enough to become a steady, stable habit.

Along the way, Eartha names the unseen barriers to adoption (the feeling of loss, the pull of familiar behaviors) and offers practical supports: small realistic goals, room for mistakes, and accessible entry practices like mindful breathing and mindful walking.

This episode is an invitation to the new mindful breathing mini-series — a pressure-free space to try, learn, and grow. Share it with the family and friends who need to hear you don’t have to adopt yet. You can simply foster.
