Denise Krochta interviews Kris Kancler, better known as SUPERSTAR, of the ROCKSTAR SUPERSTAR PROJECT as he discusses his new book, The First 30 Days to Serenity: The Essential Guide to Staying Sober, and answers some of the tough questions that come from those of us who love addicts and alcoholics, regarding relapses, frustrations, fears, anxieties, and our own judgments and cynicism.
“[Superstar] and his twin brother [Rockstar] are the creators the the Rockstar Superstar Project, created to present Drug Addiction Education in schools–mostly middle schools and high schools–in a unique way…Through music.”
In this interview, Kancler talks about his book and the writing process. Written in a unique way, Kancler began writing his book during his first 30 days of sobriety and then returned to it one year later–fully sober–to add reflections. The First 30 Days to Serenity: The Essential Guide to Staying Sober is written from the point of view of an addict during his initial recovery and gives a window into how addicts feel when first thrust into rehab. However, the “Stinkin’ Thinkin'” (Kancler’s initial thoughts) throughout the book have been revised with Kancler’s “Sober Thoughts” (his reflections one year later), leaving a piece filled with hope and positive energy.
Kancler also opens up about his own struggles with addiction and recovery stating, “It’s a family disease and everyone dances around it. It’s not just the addicts, of course, that dance with it, it’s the friends and family members of the addicts that are suffering too… That’s another reason I wrote the book: To give that friend or family member and idea of what it is that we’re thinking .” Kris Kancler offers his insights and offers tips for friends and family members of addicts and recovering addicts.
