When my children were toddlers, they would push my hand away when they were trying to accomplish something like putting a t-shirt on or pouring some water. “No, Me!” they would say. So, I tried to be patient as I watched an inside out t-shirt or the head through an arm hole or water missing the cup. Later on, when they were engrossed in some toy or coloring or something, I would carefully and quietly go over and fix it.
Addiction reminds me of this. Are we helping by doing things for them or do we just want to fix everything too quickly? Is this helping? Is this enabling? On today’s show we will address this issue with our guest.
Today’s guest is Shelly Pratt, a psychotherapist who has helped clients in addressing the challenges of emotional, psychiatric and substance abuse issues since 1987.
She has a masters of Clinical Social Work treating a broad range of diagnoses, with Employee Assistance Programs, individuals, groups, couples, families, children and adolescents in various treatment settings including outpatient, inpatient, day programs, schools and emergency room evaluations. She is currently serving as an outpatient clinician in Boston, Ma.
Shelly’s holistic approach to healing is grounded in education, compassion and empathy, nurturing the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of individuals and their families; to bring order out of the chaos, the unbearable into the bearable, and help to master what has been too overwhelming to one’s self esteem and sense of value. She can be reached at her email address: mailto:[email protected] and by phone at 617-262-9494.
