Brian Lucas is author of a new book, Here Comes the Sun: A Young Family’s Journey Through Cancer. The book describes how his family, including two young daughters, coped when Brian’s wife Betsy was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia. It was determined that the best chance for a cure for this life-threatening illness would be a bone marrow transplant. The challenges of preparing for the transplant and to having to wait until a donor was found brought much stress and anxiety. Yet, a touching ‘thin place’ event involving a butterfly gave them tremendous hope on the day they learned a donor was found. Eventually, Betsy and Brian were able to meet the young man from Germany who donated the marrow that helped save Betsy’s life.
Brian discusses the many ways people supported his family, including by responding to his postings on Betsy’s CaringBridge website. This helpful site enabled Brian to share feelings, news about Betsy’s condition and make specific requests for prayers and other help the family needed. Although he doesn’t consider cancer to be a gift, Brian believes his family received many “gifts” as a result of this journey, including new perspectives and the opportunity to give back by helping others living with cancer. He shares ideas for how both he and Betsy took care of themselves during this journey. His story will help any family living with a cancer diagnosis, in part by enabling loved ones to know how to better respond to this precarious situation. A portion of book sales are donated to Be The Match and Team in Training , organizations that helped his family and so many others living with Leukemia and other cancers.
