Avalon Beach is a legendary beach in Sydney.
It was a springboard for some of the world’s greatest ever surf champions. Kelly Slater, Tom Carroll, Layne Beachley, Barton Lynch, Mark Warren to name just a few. It is a playground for elite surfers with its enviable both left AND right breaks. Yet there is a an unusually special bond between lifesavers and board riders who share our beach amicably.
And yes, Baywatch pursued Avalon Beach with vigour to become the new back drop for their series. After much controversy and local dissent, it was not to be.
What is pre-eminent in the Avalon Beach story is the vast number of children and adults of all ages who come to Avalon Beach Surf life Saving club for arguably the most comprehensive surf skills and safety training of any beach. Adults of all nationalities who stay locally, join. Yes, from Argentina Brazil and many other countries.
The Surf Living Association trains ex pats in Singapore and more around the world.
Our guest, Steve Broderick, exemplifies the dedication and surf safe knowledge that he teaches to so many of our volunteer Avalon lifesavers, these volunteers who, give up their time to keep us safe.
Steve as a trainer, and as Skills Maintenance Co-ordinator oversees training of so many attaining their proficiency in the surf, and for many, their coveted Bronze Medallion. Avalon Surf Lifesaving Club boasts over 900 members including 300 of our amazing young Nippers.,
Read more about Steve, his passion for lifesaving, and like so many, his dedication.
More about Steve Broderick
Steve did his first bronze Medallion at Bilgola Beach just south of Avalon when he was a teenager and was hooked on Surf Lifesaving.
Then like a lot of Life Saving volunteers, work and family got in the way until he wanted his kids to learn about the surf.
He joined them up in the Nippers program at whatever beach was close to home at time, as they grew up.
Now he has been volunteering at Avalon for 12 years and is Avalon’s Skills Maintenance Co-ordinator.
Steve has been a Trainer and Assessor for over 5 years now and in that time has trained over 100 new Lifesavers for Avalon.
His daughter has followed him into being a Surf Life Saving Trainer and, in fact she is training a group in Advanced Resuscitation Techniques as we speak.
