Corporal Blake Watson discusses finding hope again during a dark time returning from active duty. A sense of community, Adaptive training foundation, purpose, and the power of love all helped him to find hope again.
Host of Check on Your Mates, is a full-time model and Men’s Mental Health Advocate living in Southern California with her Mini-Australian Shepherd named Red.
Katie earned her undergraduate degree from University of Miami. She has always been aware of the male suicide rates crisis from a young age – her sister lost 6 guy friends alone in high school to suicide. She noticed a trend in her late twenties that most men had lost at least ONE buddy or some sort of male figure to suicide. Unfortunately, this has become normalized amongst men; yet discussions about the skyrocketing male suicide rates remain silent. It wasn’t until Katie lost Cameron, her last boyfriend, in the same devastating way that she made it her life’s mission to help reduce male suicide rates. Cameron’s last wishes were for Katie to take care of his dog Red.
After Cameron’s death, Katie spent about a third of the year in her childhood bed, debilitated by grief, researching the “why’s” on why male suicide rates are so high. At her absolute lowest, she prayed to God to turn her pain into purpose. At the point, she knew that purpose was to somehow help reduce skyrocketing male suicide rates.
The next day she woke up, Check on Your Mates popped into her mind and she never felt a more clear calling in her life. During Cameron’s birthday memorial, a good buddy of his said “Check on your mates man, check on your mates…” as they too were all trying to make sense of it all. She found in some fields, rates are higher vs others, specifically amongst veterans. Since 2001, more veterans have died by suicide than combat alone. Check on Your Mates will have a heavy focus on veterans as well as other fields.
Katie‘s aim is to help even one person that felt the way Cam did and chose to hide it from the world. While Katie identifies as a Christian and her faith is a huge driver for her to publicly address the silent national crisis of male suicide rates, she will be interviewing men of all backgrounds and faiths.
