Historian Owen Muelder, author of The Underground Railroad in Western Illinois, discusses the Underground Railroad in the west. During the show we discuss some of the leading conductors, and the most well-known fugitive slaves who escaped to freedom in the west which was then the wilderness that was the states of Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa. We also discuss how the Underground Railroad evolved in the west and the difficulties it encountered with slave catchers. Muelder also tells some of his favorite stories of how the Underground Railroad outsmarted the slave catchers.
