Garden experts Derek Fell and his wife Carolyn are a thousand miles apart, he at their home and garden on Sanibel Island, Florida and she at their farm in Pennsylvania. The show begins with a discussion about holiday decorations using plants like winterberry, pine boughs, lady apples, kumquats, pineapples and pomegranates. This is followed by an interview with Renee Shepherd, founder of Renee’s Gardens, whose seed packets of annuals, perennials and vegetables are a familiar sight in stores throughout the USA, starting immediately after the holiday season. Renee gives advice about selecting sweet peas for fragrant bouquets and discusses some of her exclusive vegetable selections like Chiogga bi-colored beets and Musica pole beans that resemble scarlet runner beans, but are easier to grow and more flavorful. In the last segment answering emails Derek explains that yes, there is such a plant called a tomato-potato, a type of graft which produces tomatoes on the vine and potatoes among the roots. Derek not only explains how to make the graft, he also advises which tomatoes and potato varieties are most suitable to ensure success.
