We will start this session with movement that will help us get warmed up for the mindfulness wave activity. I adapted the Wave Exercise activity from www.stressteens.com. The information and activities are geared toward teens to guide them to use mindfulness practices using evidence-based Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for Teens (MBSR-T). This podcast aims to bring awareness on how to scale levels of importance and emotional stress based on Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Abraham Maslow introduced the hierarchy of needs in his 1943 paper “A Theory of Human Motivation.”
You will need paper and four or five color markers for the activity. I will ask you to write down nine items and rank their importance on a scale of zero to ten. If those items are depleted in your life, you will be asked to measure the stress level you think you would experience by ranking the feeling of stress on a scale of zero to ten. Choose a color that would represent that level of stress. Turn your paper over. Turn it horizontally. Finally, draw three big waves. For each wave, color the wave the color that represents the stress levels.
Join me during this episode as I guide you through this activity step-by-step. Finally, I invite you to open your mind to possible changes and choices to respond to stress.
