We live in a society that puts tremendous value on youth and views aging as a decline in one’s personal value. The message is that while growing older is inevitable, aging must be avoided. Even so, our society is growing more and more aged — according to US Census figures, by 2019, more than 30% of the US population will be age 50 or over. This creates special needs for the general population as a whole — housing, medical care, isolation and loneliness — and the gay population in particular. Rob Howard, President of Prime Timers, discusses with Jim Duke the needs of the aging demographic and how his social organization helps address those needs for gay and bisexual men.
