Despite believing wholeheartedly that getting older is not all that bad one of the things that scares me is being alone and isolated.  I can’t imagine that happening since I have 2 kids who, if I’ve done my job, will be there caring for me.  But what about those individuals who never had kids?  Who will make sure that these people are cared for, that their bills are paid and that they are not left alone and isolated?  This week’s guest, Dr. Maria Carney discusses “elder orphans,” a group of individuals who have no family, friends, or designated surrogate to help them as they age.

Dementia is hard to understand but as an adult we can usually make sense of the symptoms and changes.  But for children Dementia can be confusing and scary.  This week’s Resource Report features the book, When My Grammy Forgets, I Remember: A Child’s Perspective on Dementia by Toby Haberkorn.  This book allows children and their parents to understand the progression of the illness and demonstrates how we can all keep our connections to our loved ones.
