On Newsgram we always find unique individuals who share their lives with you and today is no exception. We’re taking you to Singapore to meet Dr Jack Tan Sok Kuan.
Dr. Tan (Dream Career) My Dream Career was banking and Finance.
We’ll get to that in a second. Dr. Tan was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth. His parents were hardworking, industrious people living in Singapore and he made a promise to them one day that when he grew up he would not live in poverty. He would pursue a more prosperous lifestyle in the banking industry.
Dr. Tan (Hard Work) Yes, it was a lot of hard work. If we have some commitment and we don’t do it, we are our greatest enemy. You will not be successful.
Ironically, the year he was born the Defense Minister of Singapore enacted the Enlistment Act whereby all National Service liable citizens are required to register for National Service when they reach the age of 16 1/2 years old and be scheduled for enlistment when they turn 18. So hard work and commitment seemed to be his birthright.
Dr. Tan (NS) Very tough! They abuse their authority and you must learn how to protect yourself and protect the country.
You know what was even tougher?
Dr. Tan (Diarrhea) That was a challenge because I was born with Diarrhea. As a baby I don’t know what happened but my mother told me I cry to hell. She was worried. Dr. Investigate. Then the doctor said that diarrhea had some interrelation to my mothers inner workings.
It was a chronic condition so growing up wasn’t easy for Dr. Tan — to say the least. He wrote a book about his life called My Mother’s Love: Growing My Life from Zero to Life Success Like Dr Jack Tan. It’s both biographical and motivational because in it, we not only get to learn about his inspirational life, we also get his nine life principles for success. Each chapter gives you a different principle explained and supported with a nice conclusion that leads to the next chapter.
Dr. Tan (Flow) Yea, I publish it, say conclusion. Then this conclusion, you achieve this, lead to the next chapter then you will continue to establish your character.
As you can hear, his English is a bit broken but he’s very smart. His book is written in both English and Mandarin. It’s all based on the motivational principles that have served him and his family well.
Dr. Tan has overcome the odds to not only achieve his dream but to raise a family of successful children. Throughout the book he always manages to stay positive and he writes very emotionally. It’s not just a motivational book of self-help principles. It’s one based on solid practical life principles based on true life and written with true emotions. It reminds me of something my dad always used to say. “…Son, use your head”.
Dr. Tan (Money and Health) Money is not everything but health will decide your future. If my brain cells are working very well I’m healthy. So if I don’t exercise my brain then I’m not giving exercise opportunities to my brain.
Work hard, spend below your income, set goals and be motivated to achieve them. Overcome life’s obstacles and live life your way. Dr. Tans is an inspiration and his life principles are worth a read because they are based on a promise made to his parents and kept and shared with us.
