The Author
Molly Arbuthnott is a teacher, editor, and academic from Perthshire in Scotland. She is passionate about the promotion of children’s literature. With a solid understanding of literature and the ability to read, she believes you can take on the world.
She uses her experiences from life as inspiration for her writing. Teaming up with four fantastic illustrators has helped to breathe life into the stories. Each story is loosely based on family or friends who have been important in her life whilst also trying to tell stories in an honest and gentle way, singing praise to things we must celebrate in our world. Teaching children to look out for others, work as a team and not be afraid of doing the right thing that is important. Such lessons might then filter through and be reflected in the way we live in the magical world around us.
Each book teams up with a charity which is associated with the theme of the book in some way. Part of the profits from the book sales are then donated to the designated charities.
Possessing an affinity for the world of books, Molly often finds herself at bookshops, libraries, schools and book festivals throughout the UK, sharing interactive and engaging writing and storytelling workshops. She has also started a “My Favourite Books” podcast where she chats with young and old about individual and common book interests.
Molly is keen in ensuring young minds through smart innovation see nature in its most natural format and once they have seen that natural beauty the world has to offer, then right from a very young age they will start to understand how important it is to protect earth’s delicate balance, plus respect and appreciate it. Some of her books open this burning emotion of hers to young kids to explore and think about.
The world of academia is at the heart and soul of this young Scottish woman’s life, she has taught in Italy, Africa as well as the UK. Molly has several degrees from Prestigious universities like St Andrew’s in Scotland and Cambridge in England, she’s recently completed a M.Ed. in Children’s literature from Glasgow University.
Her award-winning books are published through Candy Jar Books publishing house, Cardiff.UK.
Like most authors that come on the show I ask them for a quirky story, simply to ingest a little light humour into the podcast. This is Molly’s story.
Soft Play Area
I loved going to soft play areas when I was young (and still do secretly!) When I was eight, I went to a wonderful soft play area called Jungle Kids. I used the death slide there without my socks!! Halfway down my bare feet stuck to the slide. I jack-knifed and slammed face first onto the slide. I chipped my two front teeth and broke my glasses. My nanny was looking after us at the time. The managers were so horrified by the event that they let me have an endless supply of slush puppy for the day, so as we wouldn’t sue or cause any trouble, I think. I was in heaven and mixed and matched the flavours to my heart’s content and gave lots to my brother too. So, it was a sugar high girl with two front teeth stubs and broken glasses who returned home to my parents that night. I was never allowed back to Jungle Kids!

The Books
Simon the Sloth:
This enchanting story of Simon the sloth is going to inspire young children across the globe to adore sloths and possibly start to see how man is putting their natural habitat the rainforests of Central and South America at risk. Molly has cleverly combined an emblem of Scottish culture, ‘the bagpipe,’ with an adorable but endangered animal, ‘the Sloth,’ to tell an adventure story that will take young kids to the Sahara Desert, the Amazonian Rainforests, to the Himalaya’s, to India and finally on to the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury. It’s amazing what a bit of amber nectar can do. What a wonderful imaginary story backed by glorious illustrations done by Maude Smith.
Oscar the Italian Cat:
This is a quaint and endearing story about Oscar’s idea of a mini romantic trip to Venice in Italy with his girlfriend Mercy. His proposal attempts are thwarted at every turn. This whimsical story will take the kids to the majestic city of Venice one of the many jewels in Italy’s historic culture. Young Kids are going to love this simple but affective story beautifully illustrated by Agnes Treherne.
