The Author
Dr Barry Wren has had a distinguished medical career in Australia operating in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. His later years in the profession saw him working in the field of gynaecological endocrinology particularly around the area of hormonal changes in older women and the impact those changes had on those women. Broadly speaking his work in this critical and important area of medicine earned him one of Australia’s highest decorated awards “The Australia Medal.” His work and commitment to his area of expertise led to a professorship and has taken him to many far-flung places across the globe. This glittering career stemmed from very humble beginnings on a farm, (Sheep station) I believe they call them in Australia, sitting at home with his three siblings around the kitchen table under the watchful eye of his mother who was determined to ensure that the postal lessons were done before working on the farm with his father. The days of no electricity, no radio, limited phone access and the nearest neighbours with children of a similar age being eight kilometres made for a happy childhood but equally a very restricted childhood, but that was rural life in the 1930’s in New South Wales, Australia. Can you image a ten-year-old today having no smart phone in their hand and no wi-fi connection, life wouldn’t be worth rolling out of bed for. What a change!!!
At fourteen Barry was selected to attend a proper school in Sydney, an agricultural school. From there Barry aspired to Sydney University and on a whim, he chose medicine eventually specialising in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Thirty-nine years as consultant gynaecologist at The Royal Hospital for Women in Sydney opened his eyes as to how women in general were being treated by men and society. Dr Barry quickly learnt that there was more to be a gynaecologist than just being a doctor who dealt with births and medical complications and issues. Barry has written numerous books and countless papers on the menopause, so this latest book of his ‘Sex! (For Females Only) is another masterpiece for him to proudly display on the bookshelf.
So, lets turn our attention to the book, but first I must get him off the golf course to talk about it.

The Book
This book is an anthology written to re-examine the chronological events that have evolved over time to bring about today’s social exchange of views in respect to female gender inequality. Dr Barry takes us back thousands of years to explore how man then perceived how a woman should be viewed in society and equally how women positioned themselves in that same civilization, compared to how a woman’s position in the wider community is regarded today. The path has been slow and imbalanced as different cultures and communities have adopted different stances. The more liberally minded nations have moved at a far faster pace than some of the moreover far right ultra conservative sovereign states, who many in the world today still consider have along way to go on the road of social and political emancipation.
The book is short in stature, no more than seventy odd pages, but what it lacks in size it certainly doesn’t disappoint when it comes to the content and the brilliance of the writing seen, something you would rightly expect from a highly educated and professional author like Dr Barry G Wren.
When you open the book the contents page reveals fourteen short powerful chapters, those chapters are headed up as follows:
Sex! (for females only)
The Heritage of Sex
Sex Politics
Sex Education
Sex for Sale
Sex- Is It Lawful?
Sex-Historical Mythology
Sex and Mythology
Sex Hormones
Sex- Significance of Hormone Receptors
Sex, Myths, and Creation
Sex and Menopause
Sex-Menopause
Sex- Gender Dissonance
A powerful and insightful read is how I would describe this book.
