With great thanks to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada we are able to bring you the most current research on exercise and multiple sclerosis. I am joined by Nicole Mellin of the MS Society, Dr. Keith Johnston MS researcher and expert on adapted physical activity & Chris – a man with MS for 18 years – and how he improves his daily functional life through his dedication to his fitness routine. We discuss Dr. Johnston’s thesis on the metaphorical intersection of dignity, disability and physical well-being, early signs & symptoms of MS, MS fatigue, how exercise enables a faster recovery from an MS relapse & contraindications for exercise to those with MS – understanding limitations & how to work within the guidelines. We also discuss how yoga & tai chi can be adapted for people with MS. We hear first hand physically active Chris – on how he manages his MS with exercise – and the many ways he improves his daily functional activities.

We are joined by Chase Carter of HeartMonitors.com on the many ways heart monitors, pedometers & activity monitors assure we are working in the our target heart rate zone – much more than just a formula – know our own specific physiology. Studies consistently support wearing heart monitors & pedometers encouraging people to reach their physical activity demands. A reminder – physical inactivity is our #1 lifestyle killer. These tools are NOT just for Lance Armstrong & colleagues, they are for all of us that want to stave off chronic illness, those recovering from illness & must monitor their training zone. Physical activity is not the only measure we need to track – check out the shows we had on tracking our sedentary time – how sedentary time shares a deadly link with metabolic syndrome. All of these tools assure we are proactively monitoring our health.
