A healthy resting heart rate is probably the most under appreciated and under utilized vital sign of all. Fact remains – heart disease is still by far our #1 killer – and the most tragic part of all – these are very often preventable deaths – a product of poor lifestyle choices. The ultimate question to ask yourself – if I had a crystal ball and knew I would be spending the last third of my life plagued with pain, chronic illness, debilitation & my daily activities would be moving between hospitals, cardiologists, oncologists & figuring out how to pay for the pharmaceuticals – would I be living my life differently now? Would I stop smoking, find time to exercise & prepare healthy meals? Once again on Eat Exercise Live – I bring you another researcher – who helps you reap the rewards of a healthy, fit lifestyle.
Dr. Eva Lonn is past director of echocardiography for many years at McMaster University Hamilton General, Ontario Canada and is professor of Medicine. Her clinical interests include cardiovascular prevention, coronary care unit and general cardiology. She earned her MD at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel. Part of her research is finding if there is a correlation between resting heart rate – and the chance of suffering a major coronary event. She served also on the Executive Committee of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society and has published over 300 peer reviewed articles, and has delivered numerous invited lectures at various major national and international meetings. We discuss the significance of our resting heart rate, stroke volume, cardiac output, why exercise & muscle mass are so critical for heart health therefore overall health, salt intake & provides us her list of the top 10 heart healthy habits for all. Dr. Lonn tells us about the Interheart study a world revered study by McMaster University- a case-control study conducted in over 50 countries, was to determine the associations between a range of risk factors and acute myocardial infarction within populations defined by ethnicity and/or geographic region, and to assess the relative importance of these risk factors across these populations. We discuss stress as a major coronary risk factor – and how many of our lifestyle choices which we deem “help us deal with our stresses” really in fact create physiological stress – exacerbating the lifestyle stress. Be sure to stay tuned for Game Plan at the end of the show – where I bring you more information on salt intake & stress – physiological stressors. We also hear from our very own Dr. Ariel Ortiz of the Obesity Control Center – how excess body fat dramatically effect our heart rate – the miles of extra vascularization & pumping our heart needs to do in order to accommodate. I think his metaphor for how hard our heart must work will resonate with all of us! I will also share with you more great upcoming shows – designed to help you love you healthy lifestyle. Check out the orange “b” on the show page for a sneak peak – with great thanks to our very appreciated sponsors!
