Living in the Country today is hard. Life was even harder over a century ago. Many families developed a healthy dose of faith and humor to deal with surviving harsh conditions. Oral history in the form of storytelling and family traditions have been a way to pass down how these hardy pioneers lived and loved and laughed. Without this tradition of sharing, families would have lost so much of their unique family history and many of their treasured traditions.
Lucius McCray is the pen name of author Gary McPherson. In the summer during Gary’s childhood, various family members would get together and discuss the latest town news. The stories they told were “mostly true”, but there were always a few tall tales thrown in for entertainment purposes. These relatives and the stories they told form the basis for the character and the stories narrated by Lucius McCray.
In the book, Lucius “brings it back to the house” with more of his adventures. He shares “mostly true” stories about friends and family from the 1890s to the present day. Through Lucius’s eyes readers will learn how his forefathers and foremothers dealt with snakes, outdoor plumbing, the first automobiles, and local watering holes.
So, come on, sit a spell, forget your troubles, and enjoy the good old days and the better new ones. Right now, we can all use a good belly laugh! Thanks Lucius!
