When conducting workshops on emotional intelligence I often ask how many emotions people can claim to have fully experienced. Surprisingly, the average across all groups is SIX. In other words, Most of us do not have a working vocabulary of emotions. Generally speaking, it is because emotions are complex things that are a combination of thoughts and beliefs weighed against our mind’s projections. Usually we only experience our emotions as feelings or sensations in our bodies. Learning how to reverse engineer emotions from the feeling state we perceive can help us get to the root cause of our beliefs and thoughts behind the emotion.
